I’m Gislene, a scholar fascinated by studying how people, space, and technology intertwine to understand new ways of working and organising. In simple words, I study work. My focus is on the changing nature of what knowledge workers do, given the technological sophistication permeating their doing, which fundamentally changes our relationship with space.
My research follows a qualitative approach, exploring different methods, from interviews and observations to archival data – the big three, as Langley describes them. As work becomes increasingly hybrid, or in other words, within a new terrain emerging from the fusion between bodies and screens, I love trying out new ways of collecting and analysing data to understand how people move between distinct material worlds.
I love engaging with students and inspiring them to the next level while they learn about the scholarly way of studying and thinking about the world. I genuinely believe we can make a societal impact if we take a holistic view of the learning processes, aiming to balance the context and content pressures students experience. Moreover, I support scholars worldwide by actively reviewing and pushing dialogues through academic service.
On a more personal note, I advocate for democracy in all our living spaces and believe we can find solutions in dialogues. Although I can get very intense in general philosophical discussions, I don’t keep hard feelings and hope people don’t get scared of a few of my strong opinions. Moreover, I always have those conversations over a glass of wine or a cup of coffee, which are my favourite drinks.
I love my family, and Emerson is my great partner when discussing any topic. Kiara, our furry baby, has taught me so much about respecting boundaries, self-love and love for others.
Christmas is another passion I have had since I was a kid. I always feel hopeful and joyful! The colours and lights are just such the boost we need to have the energy to move forward with those end-of-the-year submissions… (hehe, or, should I say, hohoho?)

I’m an eager traveller. I love to learn about culture and how people with different backgrounds see the world. To this day, my best trip was to Peru. Besides the hype, Machu Picchu is really an extraordinary place.
